Voice Lessons

Approach to voice

Nurturing the student's natural, honest, individual sound is my ultimate goal with voice lessons. Foundational to singing is a solid vocal technique and ways to develop it are built into every lesson.  These techniques can be applied to whatever type of music enjoyed.

  • Singer’s age, skill level and interest are considered when choosing the repertoire

  • Musicianship, ear training and sight-singing skills are developed to support a well-rounded musician

  • Musical interests accommodated from folk songs, light art songs, arias, music theatre and other genres to make voice relevant and fun

  • Self-confidence, poise and expressive singing are highlighted for students interested in performance

Who benefits from voice lessons?

  • The aspiring singer interested in pursuing music and finding their true voice

  • The student wishing to take on the challenge of exams and competitive festivals

  • The young student wanting to develop a love of music and a strong musical foundation

  • Choristers or potential choristers who would like to improve their sight-reading and musicianship skills as well as develop healthy vocal technique

  • Learners of all ages who want to experience singing and increase their enjoyment and appreciation of all music

  • Students wanting the many benefits that result from music training

  • Instrumentalists who wish to fine-tune or improve their musicianship skills

What Students Are Saying

Maya H

Voice student

Thank you for working so hard every class to help me improve my voice. You are the best Voice teacher I’ve ever had.

John T

Parent of Joel: Voice, Theory and Piano student

Margaret played a major (huge) part in Joel’s voice success as it played out in the RCM exams, Kiwanis, various recitals, musical theatre awards, overall self-esteem, confidence and other multiple developments that go along with musical success. We are appreciative of this beyond the expression of words.

Bird on wires made to look like stave

Everyone Sang

Siegfried Sassoon

Everyone suddenly burst out singing
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on — on — and out of sight.

Everyone’s voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears; and horror
Drifted away… O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.
